I think we should add support for package splits to dpkg to get this straight.
If someone updates his system the old functionality should be preserved. Would
it be possible to add a split-field as

Split: 3.2.2-2 -> xterm, twm, ...

Read: this_package-3.2.2-2 has been split to this_package-current, xterm-same,
twm-same, ...
(not a real example but I do not have the package list for slink handy). 

Just a stupid idea. Better forget it soon :)
