network configuration

Hi !

Today I installed a Debian Slink system as proxy server.
There I found it annoying, that the standard place for IP addresses was
/etc/rcS.d/S40network.

IMHO no end user should fiddle around with /etc/rc*. Why is there no
/etc/network.conf or similar.

Or has this changed in the recent netbase.deb ?

read you,
