While I agree with the rest of your message, and I am on your side of
this discussion, I disagree here. Never, ever say never. Granted, someone
following stable should not encounter such a need for disaster recovery tools
because of a problem on Debian's side, they will (not maybe, but will) at
some point need such tools for their own foolishness, power outages/spikes
nailing just the right sector, disks failing, etc.
Uhm, did I ever tell you about the time that I fucked up a FreeBSD
2.2-STABLE machine? Sucker was stable as a rock, we never needed to upgrade
it and FreeBSD 3.0-STABLE was out, so it had been a while. Anyway, I was
working on a backup script that mounted drives, tar'd them, unmounted. In
having some problem with one of the commands I tried it on the command line.
It worked, I CD'd the directory that the tars were going to and "rm -rf ."
You can see it coming... Wrong directory. I was rm'ing the mounted root
drive. *MY* mistake which took a rock-solid system to its knees and force
the need of disaster recovery tools in place. If I, with 5+ years of unix
experience, could make that fubar mistake, others can to. :)
