Speed comparison: KDE vs. GNOME

I've been trying the new GNOME 1.0 and KDE 1.1 desktop environments.

The KDE "feels" much faster than GNOME - in particular the control center.
Has anyone else been noticing these speed differences ?

Could the reasons for this be due to underlying speed differences between Qt
and Gtk ? How about Mico vs. Orbit ?
