there's an existing program called 'rwhois' (i don't think it's packaged
for debian, though). rwhois is/was a superset of whois.

what's wrong with just typing 'whois -h whois.server.name query-string'?
or if query the same server a lot, make an alias or wrapper sh script 

e.g.  to query the australian whois db:
	alias au.whois='whois -h whois.aunic.net'
