This is more or less what we are going to implement using the
framebuffer device and probably libggi.
I envision it would be a bit like the menu system: an optional service
that people can install and which will be used by init.d scripts when
available.

Bootup themes as someone said is indeed what we aim for :-)

The idea is that the first face shown to people is one they can readily
accept - a more traditional logo. The lunacy element is only revealed
