What about chroot ?
I think this one is very useful when You mounted your linux
partition(s) under /mnt /mnt/usr /mnt/tmp .....
In much cases only lilo is damaged or there are some errors in
the init scripts. In this cases chroot becomes yery useful because
you can use (nearly) all of your installed software normally.
If you call "chroot /bin/sh /mnt" then you can use mc, emacs and
all the other tools you like which makes it very easy and efficient
to locate and fix problems. Sure You can do this all with the usual
command line tools but this is very painful since the shell supplied
on the bootdisk doesn't even have filname completition with tab.

When I had to fix something I always took an old SuSE bootdisk
because chroot is missing on the debian rescue disks.
