Ooops, sorry, the real culprit was libglib, and it was because the -dev version installed was newer than the library, so libglib.so was a dangling symlink and libglib was linked in statically. Morale: -dev packages should depend on the exact same version as the corresponding libraries. Same bug exists in the gdk-imlib-dev package. Sorry for the false alarm.
