There is an horribly non-free extension for French typography, "french". 
Babel's "francais" is free but much less featured (letters...). Improving 
Babel to match "french" would certainly be a good idea.

I've discussed it a lot with the authors. They will probably not evolve. 
Research in biology will have to go on with other tools (there are some good 
free programs for biosequences alignment).
