(Purposefully ignoring the off-topic thread which follows...)

Yes, ditching GIF entirely is not an option, particularly since we have a
version of the GD library in Debian (libgd-gif) which does not use the nasty
LZW compression.

The only reasonable solution I can see (aside from doing nothing at all and
requiring people to compile their own PNG-using GD from CPAN - which
actually isn't very hard to do) is to incorporate this version of the GD
library into our libgd-perl package so that it can output both GIF and PNG.

I'll look into this soon, I've done a fair bit of XS hacking so it seems
feasible (and I have a feeling that the upstream author of libgd-perl is a
bit more receptive to the idea of having GIF capability than the upstream
author of libgd :)
