In some cases, fringe architectures have helped Debian to improve as a
whole (for example, when they switched to a new GCC version before the
main distribution and provided hints of what has to be changed).

In the long run, it's quite likely that Debian's architecture
diversity can only be maintained if we mandate that all packages can
be built with a cross-compiler (maybe with a few exceptions for
self-hosting development tools) and routinely check that.
