autotools give CFLAGS/CXXFLAGS to the linker, as in the past linkers
often needed -fPIC or -g to produce the right results.
(Only preprocessor flags are not passed (that's why -I and -D belong to
CPPFLAGS and not to CFLAGS/CXXFLAGS)).
