Previously, fields.c used to use varbuf. However, very recently, I removed
this need, and did it all locally, as it is more efficient, both memory wise
and processor wise to just maintain links into everything, instead of
dynamically adding to a variable size buffer. This was done after looking at
gprof output.

This patch should NOT be applied, as it reverts what I have done to gain a
speedup.
