Version: 1.10.20
Severity: normal

The --print-avail options lists things nice ... but it is useless
for postprocessing, because the package names are turncated. I propose

a) either widen the package listing column
b) provide new option --full which would print the package name
   AND the description in full length. Now the package descriptions
   are also truncated.

An example:

If I wanted to remove libipc-signal-??? I couldn't consult this
listing. And I'm too cautious to use something like libipc-signal*
for remove regexp.

| The --print-avail options lists things nice ... but it is useless
| for postprocessing, because the package names are turncated. I propose

Uhm, are you confusing dpkg -l and dpkg --print-available?

: tfheen@yiwaz ~ > dpkg --print-avail libipc-signal-perl
Package: libipc-signal-perl
Priority: optional
[snip]
: tfheen@yiwaz ~ > dpkg -l \*libipc-signal\*
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Installed/Config-files/Unpacked/Failed-config/Half-installed
|/ Err?=(none)/Hold/Reinst-required/X=both-problems (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)
||/ Name           Version        Description
+++-==============-==============-============================================
un libipc-signal- <none> (no description available)

| a) either widen the package listing column

if you want to do that set COLUMNS:

: tfheen@yiwaz ~ > COLUMNS=300 dpkg -l \*libipc-signal\*
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Installed/Config-files/Unpacked/Failed-config/Half-installed
|/ Err?=(none)/Hold/Reinst-required/X=both-problems (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)
||/ Name                                                                  Version                                                               Description
+++-=====================================================================-=====================================================================-==========================================================================================================================================================
un libipc-signal-perl <none> (no description available)
: tfheen@yiwaz ~ >

| b) provide new option --full which would print the package name
| AND the description in full length. Now the package descriptions
|    are also truncated.

use dpkg-query:

: tfheen@yiwaz ~ > dpkg-query --showformat='${Package}\n' -W libipc\*
libipc-run-perl
libipc-shareable-perl
libipc-sharedcache-perl
libipc-sharelite-perl
libipc-signal-perl

This looks like user error, so I'm closing this bug; feel free to
reopen it if you think I'm wrong.
