Version: 1.10.23
Severity: normal

Well, it's rather grave feeling when package you've just spend a day
to build, is compiled, but isn't going to be packaged, because you need
to run i either as root ! (which is rather not understendable to me), or
use fakeroot.
Please make such error before any attemt to build package will even
begin.

On behalf of any newbie, Thank You.

This is more of a convention than a requirement ... it's entirely
possible (albeit tricky) to write a package that doesn't require root
for the binary stage and fakes it somehow itself.

If you had a successful compilation run, you can just run the binary
stage with "dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -nc" assuming a reasonable
package rules file, or "fakeroot debian/rules binary" if all else fails
-- all is not lost.

In general, I'd suggest using the "debuild" tool (in the devscripts
package) instead, this remembers the -rfakeroot for you, and is
generally more newbie friendly.

Have you ever, ever felt like this?
Had strange things happen? Are you going round the twist?
