I'm in the process of fixing http://www.skolelinux.no/~klaus/newnotater/ 
so that is also functions with Sarge, one of the chapters will be 
called 
"The special case of SATA-disks and the missing cdrom" :-)

First, you should boot with a 2.6-kernel for the installation, like 
this:
Press F1 for help, or Enter to boot: linux26

Does that help? Does the installer now see your sata-disks?
