I've been weighing up AFS and NFSv4 for a project just recently. NFSv4
is coming along really nicely (kerberos authentication works without
too much trouble, which would also work with LDAP).
AFS does work well functionally, but from my experiance was
*crawlingly* slow - I got at most 2MB/s over 100Mb lan.
