I've seen similar with ltsp.  The problem there was that esd used a
socket in the users home directory to work, and this socket is
replaced when you log in.  I suspect the correct fix is to get esd to
use a socket name with the X display variable ($DISPLAY) encoded in
it, to avoid this race condition.  Check for ~/esd* and see if it
changes.

I'm not sure how to fix this without rebuilding esd. :(
