Here a human response.
Yes, there are several automated responses in play.
One is due preventing that administrative requests,
like subscribing and unsubscribing, reach humans at the mailinglist.
Sorry that it did harm you.
The other automated message was about informing
that you were unscribe because "your" mailserver doesn't accept
email from the mailinglist mailserver.
That brings us closer to the problem that is often named "spam". For
now I want to avoid the discussion how much freedom of speech it is.
Switching a mailinglist from "open posting" to "subscriber only posting"
is _not_ a one time action. It is the longtime duty of moderating
posts from non-subscribers.
So before configurating debian-event-nl@l.d.o. to "subscriber only"
there have to be people willing to moderate.
How to volunteer for it? Sorry, I don't know, unfamiliar with it.
About the automatic unsubscribe: Do again a 'subscribe' and
explain to "your" mailserver that you do want email from lists.d.o.
