That's fine with me.  However, I did find out what it's doing: the
generated code is actually correct if it would be PIC.  Also, I don't
think it's cross-compiler-specific, but I don't know for sure.

I haven't been able to compile a cross-compiler for 4.3 or 4.4, so I
can't test if it's still present there.  Anyway it would be good for
performance if the compiler would by default generate non-PIC objects.
