Lack of time is a likely cause, I can only speculate.
The package is not team maintained, Ondřej Surý is listed as Maintainer
but hasn't uploaded the package since 2017. Mike Gabriel has done most
of the uploads since. See:

His GPG key was used to upload packages this month, so he doesn't seem
to be MIA or otherwise inactive. See:

Try contacting Mike directly.
Doing the work to update the package in your fork of the repo and
testing the reverse dependencies is also an option if you're willing to
invest this heavily in the package.
