Not sure, but what the heck are you asking? I am not interested
in gnome-settings-daemon. I'm not eve sure why you mention
it. I am sure I misunderstand what the Debian Gnome team is
doing. I feel as though I am clueless as to why some dependencies are
actually dependencies.
Can you answer my actual question? Or is my question a problem?
Open source depends on open answers.

Because without gnome-settings-daemon you have no icons set for
nautilus.
