735/125 serial console problems

Hi all,

I just got my hands on an HP 735/125 to make into a server for my family
domain. I was thrilled that my favorite distro (what else but Debian?)
is supported. However before I can get Debian on it I need to get into
it. I don't have an HIL keyboard or the right monitor (well, I do have a
fixed-freq monitor from an old Sun workstation - 72Hz 76kHz RGB, but
from what I saw when I tried to get it working in X on my PC that's not
a common set of frequencies, so I'm guessing it wouldn't work)

So I dug around and found a cable, and it very well could be a
null-modem cable. I plug it into the serial ports and fire up the
machine. I haven't figured out how to make minicom talk to it, but I
have screen talking to the hp, in a manner of speaking. I can see parts
of words but never everything. I started screen thus:
    screen /dev/ttyS1 9600,cs8
I tried using minicom by setting the serial port, baud, and 8-N-1, but
it never shows anything on the screen. So, if I don't have a null-modem
cable is it possible to see some stuff, or is it likely that I have a
null-modem cable and I'm just not doing something right?

Thanks,
Hans Fugal
