I suggest fetching the Debian/hppa CD non-US #1, performing a base install, then
moving on from there.  The key trick is to find out how to get your 712 to boot
from CD. Once thta is taken care of, following the installation instructions is
fairly straightforward.

Works well with Debian too, assuming you setup your network preferences to fetch
the IP using DHCP.

performed the basic install, I could send you my 712-optimized kernel also.
