It is a directory, just create it.

Yeah... something that should be worked on (requires a bit hacking in dpkg
sources). You can use "dpkg --force-architecture" to override this safety
check.

Unfortunately, there is no easy way to tell dpkg about this. You can edit
the status file, using the "examples" in your Debian GNU/Linux installation.
I've done it quite often, but it is not straightforward.

PS: A better dpkg fdor the Hurd is my primary concern after getting the base
packages done.
