Our nagios implementation monitors ~1000 hosts and well over 2000
services (I lost count).
We're currently moving from a single box to a number of monitoring
stations, due to loading issues. :-)

While I'm not involved in the configuration of our system, I understand
that there is a spreadsheet for all the hosts, which then gets turned
into nagios configuration files by a series of homebrew scripts.
