Bug#455723: Linux kernel 2.6.18-5 locks up (null pointer dereference) reproducibly when using serial console (via IPMI)

Package: linux-image-2.6.18-5-amd64
Version: 2.6.18.dfsg.1-13etch5
Severity: critical

After today's kernel upgrade from the Etch security repository, I rebooted our
server and watched the boot process via serial console tunneled through the
IPMI BMC's Serial Over Lan feature. To my surprise, the kernel died with a
null pointer dereference!

The hardware is a Supermicro PDSMA+ with an AOC-IPMI20-E management card and a
Core2 Quad processor. I am using the AMD64 version of Etch and everything else
works fine.

With the previous kernel version (2.6.18.dfsg.1-13etch4) even the serial
console worked well, that's why I 'dared' watch the boot process like this.
Kernel version linux-image-2.6.18-5-vserver-amd64 (2.6.18.dfsg.1-13etch5) also
produces this bug. The error is reproducible: if I reboot the machine and the
serial console is connected when the kernel starts after GRUB, it is
definitely going to freeze. If I disconnect the console client and then reset
the machine remotely via IPMI, it boots up well and functions as expected. I
discovered this accidentally when I tried a reset without a connected serial
console.

I repeat: _there were *NO* problems with 2.6.18.dfsg.1-13etch4_!

Some information about the system and the bootlog comes:

---- /proc/cmdline
root=LABEL=root ro console=ttyS1,19200n8r console=tty0 vga=extended
