Hi, Debian gets lots of bug reports, so it's not uncommon to not get a timely reply. Anyway, firmware is probably not the problem. If you're running stretch, try grabbing a newer kernel (maybe from experimental). You could also try the work-in-progress driver from https://github.com/lwfinger/rtlwifi_new See if there's anything in the log files when it fails, if so, attach that information to the bug report. If you want to get the ball rolling it's probably better to file a bug directly upstream. See https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=78691 for an example.
