Bug#852038: linux-image-3.16.0-4-amd64: Many "Unhandled sense code" errors when using a certain model of USB hard drives.
Package: src:linux
Version: 3.16.39-1
Severity: important
Dear Maintainer,
After upgrading to this new kernel, I immediately noticed hard drive errors in dmesg:

I thought my hard drive was dying so I immediately bought a new one and replaced it. When I restored my backup to the new drive, I noticed the same errors happening on the backup drive, which happens to be the same model as the drive I replaced. I thought there was no way that both of these drives failed at the exact same time, since the backup drive is only spun up once a week.
The new drive is a different model and doesn't report any errors. I plugged the replaced drive into a different machine and booted knoppix which was running kernel 3.9.6 and didn't see any of the errors I saw before after reading a bunch of the drive and copying 14G.
When troubleshooting I was able to find this Fedora bug report that seems relevant: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1351305
My errors would show up more or less constantly. From my troubleshooting, I've confirmed that:
My computer and USB bus is functioning normally (the new USB drive doesn't generate errors)
Neither hard drive is bad like I originally believed (no problem using the drive in another computer)
The last thing I did before this problem started happening was to upgrade my system to the new minor version of Debian stable.
The hard drives in question are this one: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152425 "SAMSUNG D3 Station 5TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D501TDB Black"
Please let me know what I can do to help get this bug resolved. I fear that if I continue to use these drives I won't be able to catch real hardware failures and that performances may be impacted by this. Thanks!
