The fix for [1] has been backported to 5.18.4, it's commits
7ecdcf25a9b1f41cbd4b1a68d7dd708b279fadc2 and
c5bc2bdeed8eb3555f08de2841b4f076f398537b

This is based on feedback in the bug report, I have not tested this myself.
It would be nice to have this included in Debian.
