Bug#1050852: firmware-misc-nonfree: System crashes and reboots when i915/kbl_dmc_ver1_04.bin is present
Package: firmware-misc-nonfree
Version: 20230210-5
Severity: important
Dear Maintainer,
installing Debian 12 on an HP ProDesk 400 G5 Mini works fine, but gives the following warning in dmesg:
Failed to load DMC firmware i915/kbl_dmc_ver1_04.bin
So when installing firmware-misc-nonfree, this firmware file becomes available and is loaded correctly.
Unfortunately, this leads to the system crashing every few minutes.
I have narrowed it down to the following situation:
- When firmware-misc-nonfree is installed, but I delete or rename /lib/firmware/i915/kbl_dmc_ver1_04.bin, the system no longer crashes
- With i915/kbl_dmc_ver1_04.bin present and a monitor being connected and turned on, the system no longer crashes
- dmesg shows no relevant entry whatsoever, enabling kernel crash dumps crashes the system, but it does not reboot, also no entry in /var/crash
