7.6.1 DVD black screen with Intel Bearlake and Eaglelake (nearly immediate)

Google found me nothing on point (among first 40 hits) specific to Knoppix.

Core2Duo E8400 @3.0GHz in both Bearlake and Eaglelake machines.
Native display mode is 1680x1050, with support for 1440x900 and most (all?)
4:3 VESA modes. This particular DVD has proven functional in most of my other
machines.

Bearlake:
# lspci -v
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82G33/G31 Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
	Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 2a6f
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 28
	Memory at fea00000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=512K]
	I/O ports at c080 [size=8]
	Memory at d0000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
	Memory at fe900000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=1M]
	Expansion ROM at <unassigned> [disabled]
	Capabilities: [90] MSI: Enable+ Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit-
Capabilities: [d0] Power Management version 2
	Kernel driver in use: i915
	Kernel modules: i915

Eaglelake:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
	Subsystem: Dell Device 0420
	Flags: fast devsel, IRQ 11
	Memory at f7c00000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4M]
	Memory at e0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
	I/O ports at ecb0 [size=8]
	Expansion ROM at <unassigned> [disabled]
	Capabilities: [90] MSI: Enable- Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit-
Capabilities: [d0] Power Management version 2

00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
	Subsystem: Dell Device 0420
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0
	Memory at f7b00000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=1M]
Capabilities: [d0] Power Management version 2

Producing kernel cmdlines:

	knoppix64 3 vga=791 fb1024x768 no3d nocomposite video=1440x900@60

or

	knoppix64 3 vga=791 fb1024x768 no3d nocomposite

Same result with

	knoppix64 3 vga=791 fb1024x768 video=1440x900@60

Changing to

	knoppix64 3 vga=791 fb1024x768

and waiting much longer, Adriane eventually reports initiating startup
sequence, but screen stays black. Blindly entering reboot spits out the
DVD eventually.

Same result with

	knoppix64 3 vga=791

Changing cmdline to

	knoppix64 3 no3d nocomposite

gets a bit farther visually, using 80x25

	System Setup... ******************************** OK.

before I/O stops apparently dead. NUM key changes PS/2 keyboard's LED, but CAD
does nothing until at [ 275.6####] it reboots.

Dropping to

	knoppix64 3

produces boot success, but with 80x25, far too much screen real estate is
wasted. Result is no different with

	knoppix64 3 fb1024x768

Substituting 32 bit does not help. Switching to 7.2.0 CD

	knoppix 3 vga=791

produces expected usable result. Expected results result also from installed
versions of openSUSE, Debian Wheezy/Jessie/Stretch, Fedora and Mageia on these
same two machines.
