I think you're on the right track here.  I ran in to the exact same
problem with ALSA on my PCG-XG28 (or whatever it is) with the same audio
hardware.  

It turned out that I had everything set up just fine in Linux and that I
needed to change a BIOS setting.  You need to tell it that there is
*not* a PnP OS installed, which will cause the BIOS to initialize all
the PCI stuff.

Enter the BIOS by pressing <F2> at boot time (when the Vaio logo is
displayed).
