FWIW, I had the same trouble with a Vaio, same Intel chipset I think....hmm.
Work around was to d/l a couple of the testing CD's, which can be found
here..pick your mirror. http://www.debian.org/CD/http-ftp/#testing
I'm sure there are better/easier ways to install a 2.4.x kernel shortly
after install or even with it, but this worked for me and I now have a
rescue CD. :-) Good to have when an upgrade from Win2K pro to XP pro decides
to boff the MBR .. ;-)
My best guess is that the 2.4.x kernels handle the shared irq's and Intel
chipset more gracefully. If all else fails you could try RH7.2 which ran
fine here, but I for one couldn't stand the maintenance of it. Just more
familiar and comfortable with dselect.

Trying to install Potato from CD on the machine noted in the Subject header.
The base install goes fine until we reboot from the hard drive. We get a
