That is not important. I think that you do not really want grub in your mbr
of your laptop. But you can try to change the boot sources. On my laptop I
have to press F12 on boot.

Test it. Maybe that you have to load the usb modules after the hardware
dedection. And if you do not see the usb harddisk on partion step you can
stop installation and nothing is happened on your laptop.
I would try it this way.
