Is it intended that I copy-paste the lintian message verbatim into an
override? And if yes, why does this so seldomly work for me?

That sounds nice for the web form of lintian. I usually call lintian on
the command line before I upload a package.

Those ideas are nice for the future. As a package maintainer, I hate to
see things like "lintian reports 29 errors and 5 warnings" in the Debian
Package Tracker and to see Salsa CI pipelines failing just because I
cannot figure out to properly write an override. Also, things like that
are likely to drown out real issues in the output.
