Note that

1) number of layers in an overlay is limited.

That's an arbitrary limit that cnaby changed usually but something to
keep in mind. How many layers would a live system with multitude of
squashfs images and multitude of persistence layers have?

2) composing multiple squashfs images is not always practical.

httpfs can only mount one file because http has no inherent directory
semantics but to baheve like a normal filesystem it creates an empty
directory that contains that one file.

To mount multiple images using httpfs you will probably have to resort
to multitudes of mountpoints and some symlinks/binds.

The multiple squashfs images also do not provide any advantage for
custom images.

Thanks

Michal
