I got really read from your bug report what the underlying problem is.

Is there something wrong with your background image? Or is your MATE Terminal session's background (are you really using MATE terminal and not some other terminal emulator?) not transparent, so you can't see the background image through it.

Note, that in MATE terminal in Debian, a transparent background is not the default setting. Please play with the terminal's settings and let me know if things improve.

I will close this as a bug report now as I have the impression that you are rather asking a support question. Please use the debian-user mailing list for this in the future.
