So you are basically in a similar situation as I am (as a physicist ba
profession).

GNUmed was developed by doctors to fit their own needs.

That's actually not very hard to do. It starts with
apt-get install gnumed-server
and afterwards following the provided README.Debian. So if this would
be the main problem this is definitely solvable if you give some helping
hand.
