Sortmerna has changed quite a bit in the meantime, from what I observed.
It is now a cmake project. Under my hand it does not compile because of

I tried to fix sortmerna but the patches do not apply. Since you
said you have problems with cmake I guess you have fixed patches
somewhere on your hard disk. Could you please push these?
