Indy as a print server

I try to use my indy with debian linux as a print server. I tried BSD and CUPS so far. I have a simple problem - but no solution yet. If I try to use /dev/lp0 to connect to the printer I get the following error message:

 

indy:~# echo Test > /dev/lp0
su: /dev/lp0: No such device
indy:~#

How can I enable the parallel port? I did not find anything useful about this problem in the mailing list yet.
