Other than x32, I'm not aware of any 32-bit arch that doesn't have 32-bit off_t if _FILE_OFFSET_BITS is not set. So maybe architecture specific handling could be enough: if _FILE_OFFSET_BITS==64 or __WORDSIZE==64 or __x86_64__ && __ILP32__ (for x32) use 64 bit interfaces; otherwise use 32 bit interfaces.
