This seems to be no longer the case; I have no ao= defined in
/etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf and the gui creates ~/.mplayer/gui.conf with
ao=ao_driver=pulse,alsa,sdl:aalib which will work in most common cases.
I intend to close this old bug as it is no longer reproducible
