My graphics card is an nVidia GF2 MX. I found that this problem is
present using the latest nvidia driver (1.0-4363), but not with an older
one (1.0-2960). I downgraded and everything is fine now.

Do you have RenderAccel in X's configuration on?
Does it help to shut it off?
