Wouldn't that be better suited in a application actually suited for image
processing?

More specifics? Example? Which graphic card/driver? OpenGL-capable or not?
(Don't know whether it affects it but newer version of LO do more stuff
with OpenGL and also changed OpenGL-code to eventually work with wayland...)
