What to do with broken perl installation

Hello,

I have a perl problem on one of my machines which showed up as debconf trouble:

Do you want to continue? [Y/n]
":all" is not exported by the Debconf::Log module at /usr/share/perl5/Debconf/Db.pm line 5 debconf: Perl may be unconfigured (Can't continue after import errors at /usr/share/perl5/Debconf/Db.pm line 5
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/share/perl5/Debconf/Db.pm line 5.
Compilation failed in require at /usr/share/perl5/Debconf/Question.pm line 5. BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/share/perl5/Debconf/Question.pm line 5.
Compilation failed in require at /usr/share/perl5/Debconf/Config.pm line 5.

Compilation failed in require at (eval 1) line 4.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at (eval 1) line 4.
) -- aborting
Selecting previously deselected package gawk.
[etc.]

So I got some advice which led to trying:

% perl -e 'use POSIX'
load_imports is not a valid POSIX macro at -e line 1
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at -e line 1.

How do I fix this machine?

Thanks,
