Sorry, no, I can't provide details.  I accepted Santiago's problem as
existing before suggesting a work-around; as I said below this comment, I
am no dpkg expert and don't know how well it handles symlinks at all.

If this problem does not exist, then the work-around does not need to
exist either.  I withdraw my suggestion.
