I don't believe this is wrong. I believe that the "it" is allowed
because of the infinitive, "to see."
As in, "Experience which it was pleasant to gain is my guide."
I believe that this is a stylistic, not a grammatical matter. I would
suggest consulting the Chicago Manual of Style or some equivalent
work, but I don't have one at hand. I suspect it may come down to a
matter of taste. I can, if desired, check with professional copy
editors of my acquaintance or drop by a library to research the
matter.
I don't think it's necessary to change it, however I don't object to
changing it, and I don't object to any of the suggested replacements.
