I don't believe this is 100% true. I've been running Debian from a
while on my G3 Wallstreet Powerbook (which is IDE) running MacOS 9 (I
upgraded from 8.6. I believe I updated the disk drivers). I haven't
had a problem reading /dev/hda. I have a single internal drive
partitioned into one HFS+ partition, one HFS partition and two
ext2fs partitions.

Do you have the version of the disk drivers which are causing the
problem? (Color me stupid... how do you figure out what version of
the drivers are currently installed?)

PS I'm booting Linux with BootX 1.1.x and 1.2.x
