OT: Mysql problem
hey there folks, this isn't really a debian question, so much as a
linux question, but I'm hoping someone can help me out.
Installing mysql from binaries on Slackware 8.1 (not my machine, a
friends), and I get the following message after following the
instructions:
PLEASE REMEMBER TO SET A PASSWORD FOR THE MySQL root USER !
This is done with:
./bin/mysqladmin -u root password 'new-password'
./bin/mysqladmin -u root -h p-120 password 'new-password'
See the manual for more instructions.
NOTE: If you are upgrading from a MySQL <= 3.22.10 you should run
the ./bin/mysql_fix_privilege_tables. Otherwise you will not be
able to use the new GRANT command!
You can start the MySQL daemon with:
cd . ; ./bin/safe_mysqld &
You can test the MySQL daemon with the benchmarks in the 'sql-bench'
directory:
cd sql-bench ; run-all-tests
Please report any problems with the ./bin/mysqlbug script!
The latest information about MySQL is available on the web at
http://www.mysql.com
Support MySQL by buying support/licenses at https://order.mysql.com
so I do the following....
root@p-120:/usr/local/mysql# bin/safe_mysqld --user=mysql &
[1] 11742
root@p-120:/usr/local/mysql# Starting mysqld daemon with databases from
/usr/local/mysql/data
and after consulting ps ax | grep mysql I concede that mysqld is in
fact running
so, then
root@p-120:/usr/local/mysql# bin/mysqladmin -u root password XXXXXXXX
root@p-120:/usr/local/mysql#
with no error messages, I would assume that the password is set properly
so, onto the fun part, to begin setting up some tables and whatnot
root@p-120:/usr/local/mysql# mysql -u root -p
Enter password:
ERROR 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket
'/var/run/mysql/mysql.sock' (111)
root@p-120:/usr/local/mysql#
and at this point I am stuck........ can't do a bloody thing, I've
tried every trick I can think of, and it just won't let me connect to
the server.,.... anybody have any ideas?????
